The first shipped Africans were brought just for a certain amount of time not slaves they were required as white servants were to serve seven years many were brought to the British north Americans colonies specifically Jamestown Virginia in 1620 however the slaves trade did not immediately expand in the north America.
Slaves started to run away to the north once the got there they were free but wen the new law came it said if u find a slave in North America u would have to return it to the south to its right full owner so thats means that there was no way out and once they got back they would get beat.
